I photograph because it is through the discipline of photography, and the simplification demanded by the viewfinder, that I learn things.

The South American writer Eduardo Galeano poignantly identified the capacity of photography to reveal "to us what is unseen, what is seen but unnoticed: an unperceived presence, a powerful absence."
